Some in the city received robocalls over the weekend. The call asked people who they favored in city elections and statewide elections too, like the Governor's race and Presidential election.

Thanks to NYSNYS news reporter Kyle Hughes for sending this along. The call asks voters to press numbers if they find various candidates "favorable" or "unfavorable" mayoral candidates Democratic incumbent mayor Joanne Yepsen or Republican candidate John Safford, incumbent Democratic finance commissioner Michele Madigan or Republican candidate Ken Ivins.

There was no question regarding the public safety election, which will likely include a Democratic primary between former city attorney Sarah Burger and current commissioner Chris Mathiesen. Republican Rick Wirth has also announced he will run for the position.

The call also asked people if they supported the City Center parking garage project and the expansion plans at both the Saratoga Race Course and Saratoga National Golf Club.

In celebration of American Heart Month, the CPHM EMS team gifted the devices to local law enforcement and stated they are committed to establishing the imprtance of heart health in Saratoga County.
HEARTSafe Communities
is a program designed to promote survival from out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest
(SCA). It is a general concept focused upon strengthening the “chain of survival”;
Immediate recognition of cardiac arrest and activation of emergency response system,
CPR, Rapid Defibrillation, Effective Advanced Life Support and then Integrated postcardiac
arrest care.
Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. and over
350,000 people will suffer from SCA this year. An AED is the only effective treatment for
restoring a regular heart rhythm during SCA and is an easy to operate tool for someone
with no medical background.
“With an AED onboard, the
Sheriff’s patrol unit will be able to potentially increase chances of survival in SCA by
administering rapid defibrillation," said CPHM EMS Director of Operations, Michael Seney.
For each minute defibrillation is delayed, the chance of survival is reduced approximately
10 percent. With Saratoga County Sheriff patrol units equipped with an AED device, law enforcement
will be able to administer life saving care until first responders arrive on the
scene.
"The addition of these 10 AEDs to our existing
units will allow us to deploy AEDs in every part of Saratoga County. Our patrol units
are on the road 24 hours a day and ready to respond at a moments notice generally,
arriving first on the scene. All of our members are certified in CPR and our excellent
Desk Officers in the 911 Center are trained to provide CPR instructions to callers in an
emergency," said Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo.
"The best chance for survival of a cardiac arrest occurs with early CPR and
early defibrillation. With this generous gift from the Clifton Park & Halfmoon Emergency
Corps we are now in a better position than ever to provide these two vital links in the
Chain of Survival. The men and women of the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office are
committed to our goal of making Saratoga County a safe place to live, work and raise a
family. "
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.raised over $9,800 at the annual “Protecting the Paws in Blue” charity event which was held at the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department on Sept. 21. Proceeds were donated by the non-profit to provide vests for the 10 dogs at the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501c (3) nationwide charity located in East Taunton, Mass. Their mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. Each vest costs $950.00 and has a 5 year warranty. The nonprofit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially life-saving body armor for their four legged K9 Officers. Through private and corporate sponsorships, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provided over 1,198 law enforcement dogs in 40 states with protective vests since 2009 at a cost of $1,138,100.
The organization orders the U.S. made vests exclusively from the distributor Regency Police Supply in Hyannis, MA. Who also does the custom embroidery on the body armor. Armor Express of Central Lake, MI is the manufacturer for the K9 vests.
New K9 graduates as well as K9's with expired vests are eligible to participate. The program is open to law enforcement dogs who are U.S employed, certified and at least 19 months of age.
The State Liquor Authority (SLA) issued an emergency suspension of the serving and consumption of alcohol at the Buddha tea House in Albany following a board meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 18. The suspension comes after an incident on Nov. 9. At approximately 1:45 a.m, an Albany Police Department (APD) patrol unit witnessed a victim of a stabbing exiting the Buddha Tea House. APD officers responding to the victim were impeded by a violent altercation involving patrons of the Buddha Tea House, an altercation that erupted directly outside the bar in the immediate aftermath of the stabbing, resulting in the injury of two additional patrons. APD officers report the licensee and staff were uncooperative with the investigation; by attempting to deny police officers access to the bar, denying the incident occurred inside the premises, denying APD access to security video, in addition to attempting to clean up the crime scene. The SLA charged the bar with three violations of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Law, including disorderly premises and deliberately interfering with a police investigation, according to information in a press release from the SLA.
Buddha Tea House has a history of violence since opening in September of 2012, the SLA said. On Oct. 25, 2014, APD patrol officers responded to a large brawl directly in front of the premises involving a patron striking other patrons with beer bottles. The staff again were uncooperative with police, with the APD reporting bouncers from the bar allowing a suspect to reenter the bar and escape through an emergency exit, in an apparent attempt to evade police. On July 6, 2014, APD patrol officers again responded to a large fight involving patrons and security staff from the bar, directly in front of the premises. Again, police report the licensee’s staff were uncooperative. Buddha Tea House was previously fined $8,000 by the SLA on July 1, 2014 for five separate assaults occurring on October 19 and 20, 2013, and in 2014 on January 1, February 1, and March 9.
“This bar has shown a disregard for the law and a total lack of concern for safety of patrons, police and residents,” said SLA Chairman Dennis Rosen. “This should serve as a message that we will not hesitate to take a license when a bar poses a danger to public safety.”
The State Administrative Procedure Act authorizes a State agency to summarily suspend a license when the agency finds that public health, safety, or welfare requires emergency action. When the SLA summarily suspends a license, it also serves a Notice of Pleading alleging one or more disciplinary violations. In invoking a summary suspension, the SLA has deemed the violation, considering each licensee’s disciplinary history, to be sufficiently serious upon initial review to warrant an immediate suspension, according to the release.
The SLA said the decision is not final and the licensee is entitled to a hearing, though the suspension remains in effect until determined otherwise.

Pedinotti and his parents, Dianne and Dave have attended numerous public meetings expressing concerns for the plans for the five story, 511-space structure that would loom over their restaurant and potentially put them out of business.

The Mouzon House is known for its lush outdoor gardens and sanctuary-like dining experience.

Aaron Pedinotti said in his video he plans to document the progress of construction every day, noting noise disturbances, traffic problems etc.

He said he also plans to document interviews held with independent urban planners and designers to document and support the "inaction from city government" and generate further support for their opposition.

“Once the garage is built, I intend to use my footage as the basis for a documentary about the consequences of city government inaction in the face of poor urban planning,” he said.

The Pedinotti's launched a petition and collected over 300 signatures supporting opposition, presented at a joint meeting to the Planning Board and the Design Review Commission in September.

Other residents have also started a petition with over 250 signatures which can be viewed here.

Four local veterans and their families will receive the refurbished automobiles at luncheon this upcoming Veteran’s Day

ALBANY>> H&V Collision Center, one of the largest independently owned collision
repair facilities in the Capital Region, will be hosting a luncheon on Veteran’s Day to give four deserving veterans and their families cars as part of the 2014 Keys To Progress. The event is the 7thand will also be sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Progressive Insurance, Axalta Performance Coatings, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, LKQ Corp, and The Goldstein Auto Group. It will take place on November 11, 2014 at 11 am EST at Progressive Insurance, 1586 Central Ave., Albany, NY.
The veterans and families were hand-selected based on their involvement with the military, their exemplary efforts to improve their families’ lives and their need for a reliable automobile. The recipients include US Army veteran Dan Cooper from Cherry Valley, who cares for his two children and his wife, who suffers from a rare blood disorder. Dan continues to serve in the National Guard and a vehicle would help him spend more time with his family. Tom Kudlack, a US Army veteran, of Watervliet served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and was injured during both deployments. He now shares custody of his 4-year-old son and a car would provide an easier commute to work and allow for more time to care for his son. Marine Corp veteran, Marcus Jackson of Ballston Spa, was raised with 11 siblings by his grandmother and he joined the military in search of a better life. Now, Marcus cares for his 6-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son while searching for a full-time position that he can apply his experience from the Marines. Lastly, Patrick Boyle of Queensbury served in the Marine Corps in Afghanistan as a Security Specialist. Due to this rigorous position, Patrick is now partially disabled but is working and caring for his 6-month-old daughter. With the donated car, Patrick will return to school and find a full-time job.
For more than 25 years, Saratoga Springs native Rich Harwood has worked to help people and organizations across the country create more engaged communities. On Nov. 6, Rich – founder and president of the Washington, D.C.-area Harwood Institute for Public Innovation – will return to Saratoga Springs to deliver the keynote address at the New York Library Association’s annual conference.

A nationally renowned expert, author and speaker on transforming communities, Rich – a Skidmore College graduate - will talk about how libraries, partner groups and other supporters can accelerate positive change in their communities. He will also speak about people’s frustration with the acrimony and divisiveness in politics and public life and how we can move forward on the nation’s most critical issues.

The visit to Saratoga Springs is part of Rich’s Reclaiming Main Street campaign, designed to engage people in making community a common enterprise again.

Rich was recently described as “the nation’s leading crusader for community action” in The Colorado Springs Business Journal. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune called his Institute’s approach “genius: They train a community to solve its problems, to find its opportunities.”

Rich kicked off his campaign in Washington, D.C. and has traveled to numerous communities such as Battle Creek, Mich., Murray, Ky., Colorado Springs, Colo. and Sarasota, Fl. Check out recent coverage of Rich’s campaign in an interview on NPR-affiliate WKMS, an article in The Colorado Springs Business Journal and a column in Spokane’sJournal of Business.

As part of his campaign, Rich is training 5,000 public innovators and recruiting a 100,000-person Public Innovators Corps by 2016. Public innovators are people with the mindset and skills to tackle problems ranging from gaps in education and low school graduation rates to poverty and inadequate health care. Rich will provide these community catalysts with the tools and support they need to create positive, lasting change.

At each stop, he is talking to people about their aspirations for their communities. He has created a virtual Townhall, a site where people can post their aspirations and read what others are saying across the country.
Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo and the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office announced a newly launched sex offender registry and public notification website.

The website, called OffenderWatch® will add the local agency into a nationwide network of over 5,000 law enforcement agencies. The new service is a citizen-friendly, easy to use website that enables citizens to search for potentially dangerous sex offenders and predators, which may be in close proximity to their homes, places of work, schools, churches and day care centers, the department said.

Citizens can access the site here.

The information is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is updated in real time by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office as offender information changes and is reported.

Citizens may search an address of interest, see a general map and a listing of all offenders within a user-defined radius between a quarter mile and up to five miles.

Citizens can then register the address to be

continuously monitored by the Sheriff, who will send to them an email alerting them if an offender or predator should register an address within their specified radius of their address. Citizens may confidentially register as many addresses as they like, at no cost.

“Citizens have a right to know who may be living near them and could potentially pose a threat to their families. The New York sheriff’s offices and police departments using OffenderWatch® have the most up to date information on all offenders registered in the state and I am happy to be able to provide that information to them,” said Sheriff Zurlo.

The sheriff has also made available additional web based resources designed to educate and inform the public at the department's website, found here. The purpose of the program is to lessen the anxiety of citizens by proactively alerting them should an offender/predator move within proximity to them, and to provide the highest level of security and safety to all Saratoga citizens. The program also enables the Sheriff to verify that offender addresses do not violate any safety buffers that may be implemented around protected institutions in the county, such as schools, day cares and parks, and helps law enforcement schedule compliance checks for

verifying information provided by offenders. The Sheriff also assigned a Deputy on a full time basis to ensure sex offender compliance and complete address compliance checks.

Albany, NY – Furthering Governor Andrew Cuomo’s high-tech educational paradigm as it prepares New York State’s students for opportunities in growing industries such as nanotechnology, three school districts have received “Be the Change for Kids” Innovation Awards for their novel approaches to science, technology, engineering, and math-related (STEM) programs. The competition—now in its third consecutive year—is presented by the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) and SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly).

“Governor Andrew Cuomo’s leadership continues to catalyze the rapid growth of New York State’s nanotechnology sector, resulting in powerful educational opportunities, such as those that stem from the ‘Be the Change for Kids’ Innovation Awards, that can directly meet the needs of New York’s innovation economy,” said SUNY Poly CEO and Officer in Charge Dr. Alain Kaloyeros. “We are once again delighted to partner with the New York State School Boards Association, and we congratulate this year’s honorees for their exciting, science-based programs and steadfast commitment to providing their students with the critical skills that are necessary for accessing high-tech opportunities across New York.”

“Too often we hear about what’s wrong with our schools. Yet the programs we recognize today illustrate what’s right. Each of these outstanding educational programs exemplifies the type of high-level instruction taking place in classrooms across the state, and the most remarkable aspect is that each can be replicated in other school districts without busting the budget,” said New York State School Boards Association Executive Director Timothy G. Kremer.

Over 40 schools from across New York State entered to win a “Be the Change for Kids” Innovation Award, and the three winning programs were chosen based on their ability to promote student curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and civic responsibility; prepare students for careers in the STEM-based fields; and for their ability to be easily replicated by other school districts. SUNY Poly faculty and staff members, in addition to alumni, serve as judges.

“This year’s award-winning projects demonstrate that innovation is alive and well in our schools,” said NYSSBA President Lynne Lenhardt. “From solving engineering problems, to applying classroom lessons in industry, to using lab activities to increase critical thinking skills, these students and teachers are raising the creative bar."

SARATOGA COUNTY -- Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo (R,I) today, announced that his office has
cleared the backlog of pistol permit applications that has flooded the Sheriff's Office since the
implementation of the New York State SAFE Act.
Zurlo said his office has processed close to 400 permits since January 1, 2014.
"With stricter laws in place and hundreds of residents waiting for their application to be processed, we
needed to find new strategies to help alleviate a backlog of pistol permits," said Sheriff Zurlo. "By
partnering with local sportsmen clubs and professionally certified instructors, we are now able to offer
additional safety courses throughout the county for those who are interested. This allows our staff
to process permits more expeditiously."
"When I took office back in January, I asked my staff to review the pistol permit application process. We were able to streamline and speed-up the process for those law-abiding citizens who submitted
applications and we are happy to do so," Zurlo added.
The Saratoga County Sheriff's Office is responsible for processing permit applications, providing pistol
safety courses and conducting background investigations. Those interested in obtaining a pistol permit
can find more information by visiting the Sheriff Office website: www.Saratogacountysheriff.org
With a population of roughly 224,000, Saratoga County has close to 20,000 pistol permit holders in the county.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3916367746067142134.post-6430821167382103012014-09-24T17:19:00.000-04:002014-09-24T17:19:28.404-04:00Saratoga Springs a good deal for drivers According to valuepenguin.com, Saratoga Springs places well among neighboring cities as far as total costs per year for car insurance.

Annual costs in the Spa City were on average $1,164, 23 percent less than the state average.
To see average rates for the whole state - see this link.

And just from personal observation, gas is significantly cheaper in Saratoga County right now versus Albany County.
