A political vote from Murphy?

I was over at a Scott Murphy press conference earlier this afternoon, hearing his reasoning for voting "no" on a landmark health care reform bill that paves the way for health care to be available to a wider audience.

Murphy, who appeared much more harried than usual, and spoke much faster than he usual does, cited a few reasons, that you can read about in my story (a longer version will be published in the morning.) But, I did think it was interesting to note that although he had several issues with the legislation, Murphy did not offer an amendments on the bill.

* No word on exactly why not, but if I had to guess, it would be that the Congressman knows he doesn't have enough political clout to amend major legislation put forward by the House leadership and championed by the President.

I'd further note, that just like when then-Representative Kirsten Gillibrand broke ranks and voted against the Troubled Asset Relief Program back in September 2008, Murphy's vote may have been at least partially to placate the portion of his constituency that is, for various reasons, not in support of health care reform. He knew the bill would go through without his vote, and thus didn't have to worry about having the bill's failure on his conscience, but could also say that he stood up for the interests of major employers (and minor employers) in the district, as well as continuing to talk about the need for further reforms.

When Gillibrand broke ranks in 2008, it was generally agreed upon that TARP was unpopular in the district, and seen as a politically-motivated vote done on the eve of a major election. Perhaps Murphy's vote was similar?

There is a good break down of who voted which way on the legislation here.

*It has come to my attention that a limit was imposed on the number of amendments by rules concerning debate on the bill. Read more here.

What the hell does this have to do with the topic. Plus, you clearly have no knowledge of how the department works.

OH really, what would you like to know, the topic in this town is saving taxpayers dollars, not paying off the unions, whether you like it or not Mr.Demroc that is what is going on in the DPW,the trouble is; not enough residents know it because the blog masters keep it on the blogs to protect their endorsed candidates as so it appears,in other words zero criticism, cabish?

No I mean cabish and what I 'm talking about is unecessary overtime in dpw, great article today burnstein, the leaves are falling off the trees later this year? I can't stop laughing, did dpw check with lew benton the cities' tree counter as to when the leaves normally begin to fall to the ground, the reason the pick up seems slow is because it is,the reason piles are put out after the trucks leave a neighborhood is because nobody knows when the trucks are going to be coming through the hoods..no public notification CABish, their attitude is here we are ready or not and when it's like that money is wasted on overtime like it was on wed.I guess next year we'll have to hope the leaves fall of the trees in august!

Riding around with that dunce is only going to give you a chaded veiw of the management in DPW.The dept. does start hauling sand until the leaves are picked up to the point when trucks can be freed up.The trucks Design used for hauling sand are the same ones used to carry the leaves, therefore creating a shortage of trucks that would have been available to carry leaves and also put the dept. behind schedule thus creating the unecessary overtime. This mismanagement in these times, the city cannot afford, you are being mislead.

I agree that paying double time and a half for people to pick up leaves is STUPID... what the F? The leaves will still be there on Thursday... or Friday... or Saturday... There should be NO OVERTIME FOR ANYONE unless there is a public safety issue that is IMMEDIATE in nature... not "Gee, we might have a leaf blow into some neighbors yard, so we better get the boys out there picking them up."

If all these people want to work on that day, then why make it a holiday?

Good Morning Mr Bernstein, while you were riding around with Deputy commissioner Mr. Design last week, did he bother to take you on Nelson ave and show you the horrible job done by national grind, the pot holes are so deep that yellow cones had to be put in them to caution the public of the danger, the responsibilty and the conditions of the roads falls on DPW,who in public works was checking on this job? Answer nobody, like Mctygue or not, heads would have rolled if it was still his watch, your endorsed candidate continues to surprise nobody in the know, but what is troubling is the wool he continues to pull over your eyes!
