Post election decompression
Well, I think that was some of the most hectic 24 hours of my life thus far.
From visiting a slew of city polling places with Commissioner of Accounts John Franck yesterday evening, feverishly waiting for the returns to start coming in, weaving my way through the cheering masses of Democrats at the Gideon Putnam, to desperately banging away on my keyboard in a desperate attempt to make deadline, to watching hour after hour of news coverage with broadcasts from Washington D.C., Chicago, and Pheonix. It was quite a night.
Word on the street is that an excited group of Skidmore students who spontaneously paraded down Broadway to Caroline Street, where one witness had them suddenly break out into a rendition of "Star Spangled Banner," before trundling back to campus. Another witness had students in the trees on Caroline, stripping.
I don't know which to believe, but speaking as a Skidmore alum, I have to admit that the later seems more plausible. Today's police blotter did make note of the Skidmore parade, but did not say anything about songs or nudity.
So, now we know. President-elect Obama, and expanded Democratic control in the house and Senate. Locally, most of the races went as I suspected, with the sole exception being the City Court Judge race.
Although it seems unlikely that absentee ballots will change the results of that race, it is too close to be ruled out entirely.
And now the election cycle begins anew. Palin 2012 anyone?

There was no stripping. One fully dressed student was in a tree waving an Ombama T-Shirt. The police also seemed to be having fun. It was the best local event of the evening - besides Teadwell putting his checkbook away as he drove out of town in his 6 gallon/mile RV.

A swelling crowd of 200 to 300 people came together to form a loud, jubilant street walk down Broadway at midnight on Tuesday to celebrate the victory of Barack Obama.
They wore American flags, pounded on snare drums and chanted the new president’s name as they crowded onto the down-sloping hill of Caroline Street.
City Police arrived on the scene and closed off the street for the young revelers, who expressed their joy and quickly dispersed, walking back up the hill and onto Broadway, where they were last seen headed in the northerly direction of Skidmore College.
Andrew-
I can't speak for what the Skidmore students might have done after 12:30. But I'll add to the content of the letter I hope is in Thursday's paper and swear to it in ANY Court of law--
At about 11:45 pm, three Police units responded by making speed for Skidmore without the slightest delay- One vehicle was parked in front of Cantina and raced North on Broadway...immediately followed by two more marked vehicles exiting the Lillian's lot and travelling North. No lights, no sirens.
While I could not see their interaction with the students, at least one vehicle provided a Safety Escort as the student crossed Route 50. The officers were peaceful, cooperative, and focused on safety. When the entourage arrived at Caroline, I was unaware of any Police presence in the peaceful gathering.
And finally, at 12:09 am, I heard a lone voice start "The Star Spangled Banner" and was simply stunned as the entire crowd joined as one, with all their hearts, in joyous enthusiasm. Let no rumour or no innuendo take away from that unforgettable evening, that moment and the sincerity of those bright-eyed American patriots.

Andrew,
I was at friend's house of North Broadway, and my guess is hundreds of students came streaming off campus; serenaded Dr. Glotzbach (sp?) with the National Anthem, and continued south. They were enthusiastic, excited, but respectful. It was a joy to behold such spontaneous love for our democratic process.
I know that several students did strip up on campus and many were up on buildings celebrating. The remark was "There were Boobs everywhere"
Damn! I miss all the good stuff!
