Stay safe out there, please

I was fortunate enough to make the trip back to Saratoga from my family's gathering early this morning, before the roads became choked with holiday travelers. I had a little snow and slush to deal with on the roads -- and it was enough to send a black SUV into an 18-wheeler on the thruway in the neighborhood of exit 15, even at the early-morning hour that I drove through.

So, I hope this post finds everyone back from Thanksgiving well-rested, and safe.

As I write, it's snowing outside the newsroom windows, and I can't help but notice that I've not yet seen any DPW plows out spreading sand or salt (or a mixture thereof).

There is some concern, aired at recent council meetings that this will be a long, cold, and snowy winter, and although the council agreed to slide DPW an additional $120,000 at their last budget meeting last week, there is still a Grand Canyon-sized hole in the DPW budget, which could force the department to stretch things like ice-fighting commodities thinner than they are accustomed to doing.

While this is doubtless an unavoidable symptom of the time we're living in, I thought I would just take this opportunity -- the first appreciable snowfall in the city -- to make a plea: please drive and walk safe out there. I sincerly hope that I don't come back to the office in the morning to find a pile of police press releases about traffic accidents...

Scrirocco's bullshit has got you....did he threaten you too,he has the same and maybe alittle more money in his budget for 09,so why aren't they sanding and salting the roads so the public who they serve can be safe? It's because the union(whom nobody elected)ARE RUNNING THE SHOW.

The reason the city sanders weren't on the job is simple..(1.it's a weekend and besides most of the drivers couldn't pass a breathalizer test, you beared witness to that at the last council meeting.(2.NOBODY told them it was sleeting outside,(3.scirocco has NO experience, unfortunately for the people of saratoga springs,at the end of the day the city is in for some rough times and shortcomings as a result of this inexperience...It's time to take the bull by the horns instead of spreading it.

There is none of Commissioner Scirocco's "bullshit" here -- only my own conjecture.

Recently, I've noticed a lot of anti-Scirocco rhetoric on this blog, and yet there does not seem to be any consensus on what everyone is so upset about, or why, let alone any thoughts on how to improve the situation.

Thoughts? Constructive criticism? Or shall we just continue with the poorly-thought out screed?

On a side note, DPW plows were out last night as of 7 p.m.

We still haven't seen any facts, merely the opinion of one anonymous poster.

Please offer us something in the way of evidence.

Although your distaste for the Commissioner is quite clear, you've still done nothing to elevate this conversation. Please try again.

well Andrew, I don't think we'll be seeing many facts from the Tom "she wasn't stealing on my watch" McTygue cohorts. After the city electorate rejected them in three elections in a row, they've been relegated to the backroom bloging circuit.

to the idiot who mentioned my last name, well it was obvious, it was someone who actually knew how to spell it,unlike yourself. but leave it to some creepy blogger with a vindictive agenda to tackle the more important issues such as that.
actully i was rehired to the dpw dept, which means that i had worked there in the past under one Tom lollias at the rec dept. thats right your guy Tommy had hired me there before, go figure. now you tommy fans have too much time on your hands, after being kicked out of your party and all, to find room to complain about it now. secondly, I only work part time, as i am a full time single parent, I'm sure someone will have something to say about that. I also have a college degree which I think makes me qualified to paint hydrants.
so on one hand you'll make disparaging remarks about other employees, but complain when the guy hires someone he knows and trusts to do the job. Hey Andrew, as you know, skip is down at the office a minimum of 8 hours a day I work about 22 hrs a week. if you added the 2 of us together, thats 66 hrs/wk = 3,380 hrs/ year. our combinded salaries are appx. $26,512. that works out to 7.84 /hr. as you can see, we're in it for the big bucks, oh and of course to be called out be someone asking where I learned to spell my name when they never learned at all. thanks mark scirocco

Mark Scirocco claimed to have worked at the dpw dept.under comm. Mctygue....not true another lie by the sciroccos, boy it's true Andy...the apple doesn't fall to far from the tree.have you checked out why the NYS Dept. of Labor is questioning 40 or so dpw employees...we heard it has to with possible civil rights violations and descrimination.
