Signs of politics

Last night at the City Council meeting, newly-elected Saratoga Springs Democratic Chairman Charles Brown said the political signs on Spa City streets have been absconded with.

Brown said it seems to have been clean-up by the city of all signs, not just Democratic. He said obviously the signs cost money and if "the rules are going to change" that he would have liked to be informed before hand, since for at least ten years they have been left alone.

Public Safety Commissioner Christian Mathiesen asked what streets had been cleared of political signs. "All of the ones I checked today," he said.

Pat Kane, organizer for Saratoga Citizen, said last week he found someone making off with Saratoga Citizen's signs. Last night, he too said they were all gone from public streets.

"I went to the transfer station to see if I could recover some of them but was told they were all thrown away," he told the City Council.

I'll ask Public Works Commissoiner Anthony "Skip" Scirocco if he knows anything about it today, since it would likely be his department to do the clearing if, indeed, it was the city's doing.

DPW took them down after numerous complaints of signs in the public right-of-way. No signs were taken down in front of people's houses. Crescent Ave, Route 50, and Excelsior Ave were absolutely littered with signs to the point of obnoxiousness.

It is a political season casualty. I personally put 14 signs on homeowner’s lawns (by their permission) for pro Charter Change and after hearing about signs missing I went to see the homes where I put signs up. Only 3 homes of the 14 had signs. The other 11 didn’t know who took them and wanted replacements, but with the number of signs taken it gets expensive. The City should outlaw political signs altogether and end the childish games played at election time.

Any sign on public property should be removed and discarded, with no chance of it being recovered by the "owner". Taxpayers public space is no place for privately owned signage. If the city decides to sell advertising space, great. Auction it off on Ebay and let the proceeds reduce my tax bill. Otherwise, keep your signs on your own property.

To 8:21 anonymous, you're absolutely right, Scirocco is obviously the commissioner of Public Works, not Public Safety, I made the change and appreciate that you think this blog is "Amazing!"

I'll have more on the political signs later this afternoon, so be sure to check back, I'm hearing there is a good deal more to this story.

Also, to anonymous 12:54, any information you can give me about the houses you placed the signs at would be appreciated. You can e-mail me at lmccarty@saratogian.com.

My property - where I live - abuts Crescent Street, and signs were removed from my private property. The fact that my property happens to border a mildly busy street does not give these jerks from DPW the right to remove my personal items (campaign signs) from my private property (my yard).

What's worse, is that apparently these morons from DPW took it upon themselves to do this, with no direction from Skippy or his deputy. More proof that Skippy has absolutely no control over his department.
