City Council 2013 — X

And we're off to the races. Shauna Sutton announced she is running for mayor today, so it's a race. So far it's the only one contested by two announced candidates (unless you count Supervisor, which I don't, since it is two Republicans currently running for two seats).

Richard Wirth is announcing his campaign against Christian Mathiesen for Public Safety tomorrow in Congress Park, so that will be the second.

Anyway, here is a statement from Democratic Chair Charles Brown about Sutton's announcement (spoiler, he thinks Joanne Yepsen is better):

"I think the fact that the Republican Party has chosen to back the current Deputy Mayor for the office of Mayor is indicative that they are seeking to maintain the status quo.  By contrast Joanne Yepsen's candidacy represents an influx of fresh perspective and forward thinking ideas.  As Mayor, Joanne’s office door will always be open to our citizens, which is why I am proud to support her."
"I believe this race will give our community a chance to focus on our many pressing issues and how we would like our city leaders to lead."

The party of open and transparent government my A@@

While the cities Republican committee proudly lists its members names on their public website the Democrats keep its members names secret from prying eyes.

Go Joann! The republicans make a big issue out of a democrat introducing sutton. While I'm a lifelong resident and republican. It is time to end the Johnson tenure in city hall. Johnson said sutton helped with saving money on health insurance. They neglected to say it was going to save millions and saved next to nothing. They had to hire another company to reimburse employees and retirerees there co pays. Probably one of Scott's friends companies. Maybe sutton and Rick wirthless can both have Tom Curley and dud dudla running there campaigns. Tom who changed his party after all the embarrassment and money he cost this city can now cross endorse sutton, wirthless/dudla team, and the rest of the republicans. If by chance sutton, wirthless do get elected at least Rick will still have somebody to tell him what, when, how to do everything, with the assist of dud and Curley.

It was stated at the last Council Meeting that there were significant savings in healthcare costs for 2012 and infuture years to come. That statement came from a Democratic Finance Commissioner who actually gets her numbers correct 20% of the time. Uninformed people as the previous commentor - 6:32 does not have any awareness to the facts. Dudla and Wirth are not involved in his campaigh at all and he has someone stronger than both of them to support him in his efforts. The comment reflects total ignorance and a lack of awareness to today's circumstances as to five years ago. Dudla and Curley are history and chose to play golf at their leisure. Elections are the last thing on their mind. Rick will step forward not backward and Shauna will continue the excellent job the Mayor's dept. has done in the last five years. She is a leader. The opposition reflects little in accomplishment and a lot in picture taking and image creating because Joanne has no record of success much less any knowledge of the Mayor's and Planning Dept. I doubt she could even develop a budget. There is a clear difference between the two candidates and Shauna is much more qualified. The should be no decision to make as to the better candidates are. Has Joanne ever been in the Rec Center or spent 50 to 60 hour work weeks. That answer is clear. The city needs to move forward not backward.

Not all of the 50-60 hours were spent working for the city.

Anon 2:26 What makes you believe Wirth will step in any direction? He had two years to accomplish absolutely nothing. He did nothing, he said nothing and didn't even have a single meaningful discussion while sitting on the Council (everything he said was scripted). Don't take my word for it...watch the meetings yourself.

2;26, Come on Al. The Finance Commissioner and her Deputy have taken the Department and brougt it into the 2000's, and have made the City accounts very transparent, which is something accomplished in the 1st year. The management has been superb and they do get the numbers right.
It's when you spout off budget numbers that people walk away with that dumb founded look.
