shocked

Joy Karam. Whodathunkit?

Joy was one of the first people I met when I first took this job, and Ted Reinert was showing me around City Hall, introducing me to people. Joy always struck as friendly, but distant. She's come out of the office and give me a hard time if I was ever hanging around the police station, but if I ever called for the commissioner (be it Tommy or Skip), she was always quick to pass the along to another staffer. Almost as if she was under standing orders to be vague about the commissioner's whereabouts to members of the press.

That she was caught up in skimming money from tax payers is somewhat surprising, although, given the constantly-swirling rumors of corruption during the McTygue years, it certainly isn't a complete shock.

When I called McTygue today he claimed no knowledge that anything was amis during his watch. If you're not totally convinced, you're not alone. DA Jim Murphy says that as of now, it appears that no one else was involved in Karam's scam, but if Skip noticed a discrepancy, Tommy's eyes must have been shut pretty tight to miss it.

It'll be interesting to see what dirt flies as this continues to shake out.

Dear handy andy, you said skip found some discrepancies.... that's interesting..with you only being in saratoga for five minutes, you probably don't know about big skip with he was our supervisor, seems back then Lew benton and shawn thompson discovered that big skip was fudging his time cards..It seems at that time skip was on the job as dog catcher and attending county meetings at the same time, they had him for falsfying his time cards...check with lew on this he still has that information..because of that scandal yepsen and keyrouse were elected and know he's involved in another scandal.Shouldn't you as a reporter wonder why Lew Benton, Shaunie boy and skip are all in bed together? As a reporter shouldn't you be asking who, when and how the Karam investigation came about and what role did deputy design play in all of this? after all he hung around her desk for years and frequently was seen at lunch with her.  You have let your personal prejudice overtake any objectivity you might have had.Which then raise the question who else has you on their payroll?

9:54 -- For the record, I've lived in Saratoga Springs for five years, more than long enough to be aware of the incident you're referring to. In fact, I think I'm more knowledgeable about it than you are.

While there is not doubt that Scirocco was not correctly completing his time cards, I hope you'll recall that that Scirocco was cleared of any wrong-doing by a Grand Jury. While he was attending to county business on police time, there are also numerous instances where he was attending to police business officially on his own time.

Furthermore, you allege that Skip, Thompson, and Lew Benton are "in bed together," and yet, it was Benton who brought Scirocco's incorrect time cards to light, which you state in your screed. How does that qualify for "in bed together?" Strange bedfellows to be sure. Perhaps you don't know the meaning of the expression.

"As a reporter shouldn't you be asking who, when and how the Karam investigation came about..." We already know the answer, it's in the newspaper. Reading is good for you.

Beyond that, I fail to see how stating some facts in a blog post, and raising some questions that I have belies any kind of alleged prejudice on my part.

"Which then raise the question who else has you on their payroll?" -- Are you kidding me with this? You think I'd be driving a beat up Nissan if I were riding a gravy train of corruption? Furthermore, do you really think local politicos would "buy" a writer? I'd like to think I have that much influence...

Your demonstrated lack of knowledge of the issues, of the role of a journalist, and your clear misunderstanding of political departmentalization of this city leads me to conclude that you're just another clown with a keyboard. Please go don't darken my door step any longer.

At least you do raise one interesting question, and that is about the role of Deputy Commissioner Design. We'll see if his role is expanded.

The reality is that McTygue's legacy is corruption, abuse of power and intimidation. Valerie was right all along. She had the courage to take on McTygue. Johnson would not have, Boyd and Franck didn't. No, Franck was and is McTygue's apoligist. Comm. Scirocco has done a good job and as a Democrat I will support him again next year. But not Franck who unmercifully attacked Keehn to ingratitate himself with McTygue.

He, like McTygue, is done. And for good reason.

The McTygue reign is over. Only Johnson and Franck are left to cover up for him by down playing the DEC investigation.
