Arpei to make it official *Updated*

It's been quite some time since John Arpei was endorsed by the Saratoga Springs GOP to make a run for Commissioner of Accounts. A little more than a month after Arpei was endorsed and said he would make his announcement official within the week, he is prepared to make that announcement... within the week.

Here is the brief announcement from the GOP:

"John Arpei will formally announce his candidacy for Commissioner of Accounts of the City of Saratoga Springs this Wednesday, July 10 at 12:30 pm in Congress Park near the veteran’s bricks.
Dave Harper
Chair, Saratoga Springs City Republican Committee"

This will make the first time since 2007 when he took office that Accounts Commissioner John Franck will have opposition.

*Update*

I received another announcement about Arpei's announcement. This time from Debbie Harper (not sure if or what the relationship is to Dave Harper). This one had a little more personal flair.

"Long time resident, John Arpei is announcing his run for Commissioner of Accounts for the City of Saratoga Springs on his birthday. Wednesday, July 10th at 12:30 pm he will gather with friends, relatives and supporters at the Veteran’s Walk located in Congress Park. There, at his Father’s memorial brick he will declare his candidacy."

A word to the wise. If he is to have a chance he should distance himself from Sutton, as should the other Republican candidates.

She is seen as toxic and will have to carry the burden of the Rec. Center deficits, legal cost overruns, failed contract negotiations, etc.

Just a friendly word of advice.

Is David Harper not conflicted. He is the City Republican chair and therefore plays the major role in selecting Republican candidates for the City Council.

Those candidates, if elected, confirm appointments to the City Center Authority. They, in turn, have appointed Harper - a lawyer - City Center Authority attorney.

So the Republicans are beholden to Harper. Hardly a good position to put anyone into.

Does the City Center Authority have its own Code of Ethics or does the City's apply?

No political officer - of either party - should be in this position. Too many potential problems and conflicts.

The Rec Center pays for itself in many ways and has contributed to the growth of the revenues of the city. As for union contracts why can anyone state they are failed. Sometimes no contract is a positive thing. As far as cost overruns for legal fees some of those legal fees saved the city a tremendous amount of dollars on an ongoing basis. It was the contracts that had no legal input especially in Public Safety that have the city stuck with Cadillac Contracts for life. Facts Facts Facts.Thank you Lou Benton and Ron Kim. for your never ending contribution tot he city. The last thing the city needs is another team of Mambo John and the Clark Bar.

The comment is the Saratogain commentary section about Mr. Arpei being too old for the position is discriminatory and should not have been printed. Are these edited. The senior community are the wise people with values who were a major part of bringing Saratoga Springs out the the 70s to a first class city. Maybe Mary Lou should stop being involved with the City.

9:08, it just shows you how the good old boy's network is still alive and kicking in Saratoga.

7:14 am, can you show us some examples of profits the Rec Center is making? From the info on the City's website under Transparency the figures for expense and income don't show it, then Al, you can toot Shauna's horn.

1:19 P.M. - Did you ever hear if indirect income? Check the occupancy rate at the hotels when there are tournaments in town and the number of restaurants that are wall to wall with visitors to the city and parents and family of the children playing in the tournaments. You won't find that on the City website. You have to use your brain and a little common sense. No one needs to toot Shauna's horn. She has done it all and has the experience that makes her without question the better qualified candidate. Of course sometimes qualifications don't matter. I'm not sure what Al you are referring to but that remains a mystery to me.
